The Effects of Non-surgical Management for Mechanical Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract
This retrospective study was carried out on 31 patients who admitted because of mechanical intestinal obstruction at Inha general hospital during the 2 year period of Jan, 1989 to Dec. 1990. A diagnostic criteria for mechanical obstruction were;
1)
metalic bowel sound, 2) obstipation, 3) multiple step ladder air fluid level on simple x-ray. All 31 cases satisfied above three criteria simultaneously. Among 31 cases, 11 patients were treated with Miller-Abbott tube insertion, another 11
patients
were relieved by Levin tube only, and the remain 9 patients were surgically treated without any morbidity or mortality, Non-surgical correction should be considered before deciding immediate operation even though it is complete obstruction,
especially
who doesn't have previous operation history or who has previous gynecologic operation history. Because strangulation obstruction cannot be exactly distinguished from simple strangulation obstruction cannot be exactly distinguished from simple
obstruction by clinical and laboratory data, we recommand to apply intolerable abdominal cramping or continous pain' as a criteria for deciding emergent operation.
